Adamstown Community Early Learning and Preschool is 39 place community based early education and child care service which caters for children aged 6 weeks to 6 years.

As a community based not for profit service, our building premise is owned by Newcastle City Council and operates as an Incorporated Association. The management structure consists of a voluntary parent committee who are responsible for the viability and managerial aspects of the business and who employ a qualified service director responsible for the day to day operations of the service.

We have three age specified learning environments; Nursery 0-2 years, Toddlers 2-3 years and Preschool 3-5 years, which support children’s strengths, needs and interests. Our highly qualified and experienced team implement an emergent curriculum based on the Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF, 2009).

ACELP was the winner of the 2019 Hesta Award for their innovative practitioner research project on Building children’s risk competence.

The centre research team conducted the research including analysing the data alongside academics from the University of Newcastle and implementing a unique change project with educators and children.

From this research, the service was able to validate the importance of including risky play into their curriculum as when children were supported through a series of specific intentional teaching strategies, they were able to better perceive, assess and manage risk in their play. The research project gained a lot of media attention which was evident on Channel 10’s The Project, ABC radio and in various educational blogs.
