Risk - Developing children's risk competence
Our Engineers room is a vibrant, inspiring and intellectually rich learning environment designed for up to 26 children aged 3 to 5 years each day. Supported by four qualified educators, including a university-qualified Early Childhood Teacher, children are immersed in a curriculum that balances intentional teaching, child-led inquiry and meaningful research supported play-based learning. Every experience is thoughtfully designed to challenge children's thinking, foster independence and prepare them not only for school, but for lifelong learning.
The preschool years represent a critical period for developing the executive functioning skills that research consistently identifies as the strongest predictors of future academic achievement, emotional wellbeing and life success. Executive functioning refers to the brain's ability to plan, organise, focus attention, remember information, regulate emotions, solve problems and adapt to new situations. These are the foundational learning skills that children need to succeed at school and therefore is the very basis of our school readiness program. Throughout our curriculum, educators intentionally create opportunities for children to strengthen these essential cognitive skills through sustained investigations, project work, collaborative learning and increasingly complex problem-solving experiences.
Inquiry forms the foundation of learning within our Engineers room. Children are encouraged to ask questions, test theories, investigate ideas and think critically about the world around them. Rather than simply providing answers, our educators intentionally scaffold children's thinking through open-ended questioning, shared research, reflection and experimentation. This approach nurtures curiosity, creativity, resilience and confidence while supporting children to become capable thinkers who understand that learning is a lifelong process.
Literacy and numeracy are meaningfully embedded throughout everyday experiences rather than taught in isolation. Through storytelling, rich conversations, dramatic play, mark-making, shared reading, mathematical investigations, construction, cooking, science and everyday problem-solving, children naturally develop the knowledge, vocabulary and understanding that underpin future success at school. Our educators intentionally extend children's thinking, recognising that meaningful learning occurs when concepts are explored within authentic and engaging experiences.
School readiness extends far beyond recognising letters and numbers. Research demonstrates that children's social competence, emotional regulation, independence, communication skills and executive functioning have a significant influence on their successful transition to school. Our comprehensive Transition to School Program intentionally supports children to become confident learners who can manage routines, collaborate with others, regulate their emotions, solve problems independently and approach new experiences with confidence and resilience. We work closely with families and local schools to ensure every child experiences a positive and supported transition into their next learning environment.
Educators intentionally foster leadership opportunities, encouraging children to contribute their ideas, advocate for themselves and others, demonstrate empathy and develop a genuine sense of responsibility within their learning community.
Carefully designed indoor and outdoor experiences strengthen children's gross and fine motor skills while promoting coordination, balance, confidence and body awareness. These experiences support children's growing independence and prepare them for the increasing physical demands of school, including writing, self-care, participation in sport and sustained engagement in learning.
Our Engineers environment reflects our strong connection with nature and our belief that children learn best through meaningful experiences with the world around them. Natural materials, open-ended resources and thoughtfully designed learning environments inspire creativity, investigation and collaboration while fostering environmental responsibility, sustainability and a deep respect for the natural world.
Above all, we believe every child is capable, competent and full of potential. By combining research-informed practice, intentional teaching, secure relationships and a curriculum built upon children's interests and strengths, we empower children to leave our Engineers room as confident communicators, curious investigators, resilient problem-solvers and compassionate citizens who are well prepared for school and equipped with the skills to thrive throughout their lives.
